Blackwater walksThe Blackwater Valley boasts a wealth of beautiful and varied loop walks in mountain ranges including the Galty, Nagles and Knockmealdowns (above). The website  www.blackwatervalley walks.com lists a number of walks, with maps, historical notes, local information, directions and distances.

Woodland restorationCoillte has launched a DVD to showcase EU-funded woodland restoration projects underway around the country. The projects aim to restore natural woodland habitat by removing non-native trees and invasive exotic shrubs, and to promote natural regeneration of the priority woodland habitat. Copies of the DVD are available via www.coillte.ie.

Bouldering leagueThe Irish Bouldering League 2008-2009 continues this weekend at the new climbing wall, the Height, in Dingle in Co Kerry. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope. The league will have a total of five rounds, three rounds before Christmas and two after.  www.climbing.ie.

Youth ClimbingThe Mountaineering Council of Ireland (MCI) Youth Climbing competition and coaching day takes place on December 6th at Hotrock Climbing Wall in Co Down. The competition will be a fun event, with an emphasis on improving your climbing as well as competing. You must register with the youth officer in advance to take part. www.mountaineering.ie.
